An anonymous donor has offered to match up to $10,000 in donations in order to improve the Tiered Registry Law. Improvements would include, but not be limited to, lowering the tier assignments of those convicted of PC 311.11 (felony possession of child pornography), PC 288.8(c) (lewd or lascivious conduct with 14 or 15 year old), PC 288.2 (felony providing harmful material to a minor), PC 288.3 (unlawful communications with a minor) and PC 288.4 (sting operations). Another improvement would be creation of an “offramp” for those assigned to the highest tier, Tier 3, which currently requires lifetime registration.
Under the terms of the challenge grant, the donor will match $1 for every $1 in donations from others. The donor has suggested he would increase his donation if donations from others exceed $10,000.
“We thank the donor of this challenge for both his generosity as well as his wisdom that significant resources will be required in order to persuade the state legislature to improve the Tiered Registry Law,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci. “Donations can easily be made online using the Donate button on every page of the ACSOL website. Or donations can be sent to ACSOL at 2110 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95816.
The CA Sex Offender Management Board (CASOMB) has recommended to the state legislature several, but not all, of the changes advocated by ACSOL. A copy of Tiered Registry Law improvements recommended by CASOMB are listed and described in a report issued by the Board earlier this year:
Proposed Amendments to Tiered Registry Law - Jan 2024
LOL, I donated $50.00 today at 12 pm before this was announced. Hope it counts and is doubled, but either way i am glad to give back to ACSOL. Keep up the good work. We will get there.
As a 288.2 registrant — moved from a 1997 no-post (tier 1 assignment) to tier 3 in 2022 — this news is more than heartwarming. If moved back to a no-post, I would be able to resume work for the family business again!
BTW, I sure wish the CA Legislature would tackle the Tier changes this year, though I understand why they probably wont: election year.
Ironically the legislature is *really* taking the heat this week for pending legislation that would let certain Lifers out of prison if they meet certain criteria, for instance they mustn’t have murdered more than 2 people!).
Of course, the devil’s in the details but the news media is having a field day as you can imagine.
Why no backbone for us?
Didn’t CASOMB also say they were going to recommend all misdemeanors, including 17b reductions, to be Tier 1 as well? All of these were originally Tier 1 under the original bill. Seems a bit strange to want to ask for felonies to be Tier 1, while misdemeanors still being left at Tier 3.
Thank you to the 18 people who have made donations so far! The total of the donations is $2,030 which means we have about 20 percent of the funds needed. Please consider donating any amount you can to help ACSOL meet this goal so that we can work toward a significant increase in the number of people eligible to petition for removal from the registry.
Done. $50. I wish I could donate ten times that amount. Thank you Janice and all of you who are fighting for those us bumped to Tier 3. What a nightmare.
As of this morning, ACSOL has received donations in the total amount of $4,250. Thank you! We only need $5,750 more to meet the challenge grant. Donations in any amount are welcome as they will all be used toward legislation that increases the number of people eligible to petition for removal.
We have reached the half way point for the matching grant program. As of today, ACSOL has received a total of $5,285 that will be used to help significantly increase the number of people who can petition for removal from the registry. Many thanks to those who have already donated. If you haven’t donated yet, please know that we have about 3 more weeks to reach the goal of $10,000. Please help us reach this goal!
I’ll donate anyway, but does 288.4 include the subcodes? Like 288.4 (a), 288.4 (b), etc.?
As of this morning, ACSOL has received a total of $8,105 in the matching grant program from a total of 41 people. A sincere thank you to each and every one of those people! We are now less than $2,000 from our final goal. If you haven’t already made a donation, please do so that you, too, can help significantly increase the number of people who are eligible to petition for removal from the registry.
